What are Chakras?

Chakra is a sanskrit word meaning Wheel of Light. Chakras are spinning vortices (vortex is singular) of light within the human body. Rosalyn Bruyere uses this name for the title of her comprehensive text on the chakra system, Wheels Of Light, Simon and Schuster, 1989.
As long ago as 50,000 years the Egyptians were defining chakras as spinning energy centers of the human body. A bit later the Native American Tribes were (still are) using their knowledge of the chakras to treat the physical, mental and spiritual health of the body as well as the community.
Working with the energy of the chakras is a non-denominational endeavor and has to do with the natural body, your natural body energy.
You may have seen basic charts such as the one below identifying seven primary chakras and describing their realms of function. Some cultures identify more than seven, some less. Along with the primary, there are as many as 122 secondary chakras in your body.
Each Chakra is involved in the functioning of a body and impacts certain organs, glands, parts of the body. Each Chakra has a corresponding color, element, gender, positive or negative charge and many other helpful correspondences.
